TeleCatch is an open-source tool to visualise, filter and extract data from a list of Telegram groups and/or channels.

Within the ever-changing digital environment, Telegram, with its expansive, encrypted conversation capabilities, has emerged as an invaluable tool for studying communication dynamics. TeleCatch has been developed by the digital methods team of CGIAR FOCUS Climate Security to extract, filter, and visualize Telegram data from public groups and channels. It is an open-source software that users can install and run in their own machines. It requires users to have a Telegram account and an API token from the platform, ensuring compliance with Telegram's data use policies.

Users can curate their own collections of Telegram groups and channels to upload to the tool. They can then filter messages circulating within their collections based on several platform affordances, as well as by keyword queries. Results include metadata and content from messages, including image files. The data can be downloaded in several formats for post-processing and analysis.

The tool is still under development. Currently, TeleCatch is used in several research activities by CGIAR FOCUS Climate Security, specifically the Initiative on Fragility, Conflict and Migration, where we are researching human mobility narratives.
