  • The Netherlands Research School for Media Studies

    The Netherlands Research school for Media Studies (RSMS) is a national network of academic experts in media research. It aims to provide excellent, state of the art education in media studies to PhD candidates and research master students. Also, it’s ambition is to provide a platform for academics who want to exchange expertise, build coalitions between various research groups, to coordinate and prepare joined grant applications, and to represent the field of media studies at national and international levels. Further, it tries to offer a platform for Dutch graduate students in media research at various universities in order to build academic networks with their peers and to get acquainted with specialist research and researchers in their field. Finally, it aims to offer an international platform which represents Dutch media scholars in international networks, funding bodies, and scientific/academic councils. The participating universities are the Erasmus University Rotterdam, Leiden University, Maastricht University, the Radbout University Nijmegen, the University of Amsterdam, Utrecht University and VU University of Amsterdam.

The mission of the Institute of Network Cultures is to explore, document and feed the potential of new media to generate socio-technological change. The Institute of Network Cultures was founded by Geert Lovink following his appointment as Professor within the School of Interactive Media at the Hogeschool van Amsterdam (Amsterdam Polytechnic).

    The Digital Methods Initiative is a contribution to doing research into the "natively digital". It is connected to the University of Amsterdam. The focus is on how methods may change, however slightly or wholesale, owing to the technical specificities of new media. The effort is to bring together in one realm the expertise developed over the past number of years for the purposes of information and data-sharing, teaching and research, in what some call a 'collaboratory'. In particular the initiative seeks to invite Internet researchers into a particular strand of thought concerning the specificity of the new medium and the distinctive approaches to its study.

    Waag Society, institute for art, science and technology, develops creative technology for social innovation. The foundation researches, develops concepts, pilots and prototypes and acts as an intermediate between the arts, science and the media. Waag Society cooperates with cultural, public and private parties.
  • Virtueel Platform

    Virtueel Platform stimulates and strengthens cultural innovation in the Netherlands by sharing knowledge about e-culture and increasing its visibility and scope.
  • Mediamatic
    Vijzelstraat 72, Amsterdam
    Since 1983 Mediamatic has been active as a cultural institution. Mediamatic is interested in cultural developments that foster new technologies, and new technologies that spur cultural developments. Mediamatic has produced CD-ROMs and magazines, exhibitions, workshops, salons, dev camps and other get-togethers. They contribute to the development of software and art, and occasionally act as a publishing company. Mediamatic.net was launched in 1994 and has been a growing online social network since 2002.
  • STEIM

    STEIM (the studio for electro-instrumental music) is an independent live electronic music centre unique in its dedicated to the performing arts. The foundation’s artistic and technical departments support an international community of performers and musicians, and a growing group of visual artists, to develop unique instruments for their work. STEIM invites these people for residencies and provides them with an artistic and technical environment in which concepts can be given concrete form. It catalyzes their ideas by providing critical feedback grounded in professional experience. These new creations are then exposed to a receptive responsive niche public at STEIM before being groomed for a larger audience.

From studios in Amsterdam and L.A, Submarine Channel creates content that exploits new technologies to tell stories in visually exciting, multiple format-friendly ways – including motion comics, online games, web documentaries, and video portraits about pioneering creatives from all over the world. The popular website streams authored content as well as the best in next-gen cinema by peer creators, attracting a global following of creative professionals across the spectrum.

    De Balie is a platform for debates, seminars and films focussed on cultural, artistic, political and social issues.
  • NIMk Artlab
    Keizersgracht 264, Amsterdam
    The Artlab is the department within the Netherlands Media Art Institute that is responsible for research. Artlab supports research by artists into the use of new media within the visual arts. Here artists can experiment, make contact with one another, cooperate and create new work. Through the Artist in Residence program artists are invited to submit project proposals in the field of streaming media, wireless and 3D applications. The Artist in Residence program is a structural part of the Institute. In addition there is occasional research done into tools that can be of service in the process of presentation, production, post-production and distribution of streaming media. As a research center, the Netherlands Media Art Institute focuses first on professional specialists, but students can also approach it with problems they may encounter. With the aid of the open source and open content principle, as much knowledge and expertise as possible is made available by the internet.

  • Open State Foundation

    The Open State Foundation is an organization created out of a merger between former ‘Stichting Het Nieuwe Stemmen’ (or: The New Voting Foundation) and the ‘Hack de Overheid’ collective (or: Hack the Government). Hack de Overheid wants governments to share more data with the public. As such, it focuses on the Open State Foundation pointer of open government. Moreover, Hack de Overheid stimulates open data usage and creation in order to develop valuable online applications. These applications can be used in a variety of areas, ranging from society to business life.

  • Netherlands Media Art Institute
    Keizersgracht 264, Amsterdam
    Open until December 31, 2012 with the exhibition “Yes We’re Open” exploring the subject of openness in art.
    NIMK has functioned as a comprehensive space. It put on 4 exhibitions a year, supported the Artlab research space for artists in residence, and developed media conservation research. Its collections and research are being contributed to a new foundation called Formerly known as MonteVideo , as well as anew institute under development by SMART Project space: NASA (New Art Space Amsterdam). Materials will also be shared with a new media center in the Hague called THX.
  • SKOR Foundation for Art and Public Domain
    Ruysdaelkade 2, 1072 AG Amsterdam
    This Dutch cultural organization’s mission it to contribute to the ongoing debate on public space and the public domain. It develops art projects with artists concerning the definition and use of public space and and its relationship to society, art, architecture, and urban planning.

    An artist institute based on the classic concept of the Academy where artists, philosophers, and academics incubate and discuss ideas. It offers up to two-year residencies to approximately 50 international artists at a time and presents occasional exhibitions of these resident artists.

    This museum contains four different gallery spaces, a café, and a lending library and bookshop containing photography books. It also publishes a magazine and other photography related publications.
  • Stedelijk Museum
    Museumplein 10, Amsterdam
    Founded in 1874, and about to experience its grand reopening after extensive renovations on September 23, 2012, this museum is dedicated to modern and contemporary art as well as design. It features one of the three largest modern and contemporary art libraries in Europe including not only books but also exhibition catalogues, subscriptions, out-of-print journals, and dvds. The museum curates a video channel, ARTtube, which features interviews with artists and videos on art topics, and offers gallery talks, film screenings, music and performance events.
  • De Appel Arts Center
    Prins Hendrikkade 142, 1011 AT Amsterdam
    An exhibition space for visual arts as well as performance, dance, and theatre events, it showcases work by major players in the art world. The center programs talks and conferences under the name Appel on the side and publishes books, monographs, and essay collections. It organizes an 8 month Curatorial Programme in which young international curators are trained and given the opportunity to gain curatorial experience. It presents both solo and group shows as well as longer installations.
  • SMART Project Space
    Pathological Anatomical Laboratory Building, Arie Biemondstraat 101-111, 1054 PD Amsterdam
    Founded in 1994, this mixed use space features 12 artist studios, 6 for Dutch artists and 6 for international ones, as well as 2 apartments for guest curators and critics traveling to Amsterdam for research. It also houses a cinema with near daily film screenings and a café, Media Café Lab 111. Its website is rather clunky, but includes the fantastic SMART Video Server, a collection of video art and art cinema available for streaming.

    Founded in 1988, this contemporary gallery represents primarily Dutch but also international emerging artists. Its mission is to help young artists develop their careers. The gallery also features a front room project space called Playstation, featuring younger artists.
  • Annet Gelink Gallery
    Laurierstraat 187-189, 1016 PL Amsterdam
    This professional commercial gallery includes both a main project space and a smaller one called Bakery which occasionally puts on supplementary exhibits. The gallery also has a publications shop.
  • Galerie Juliette Jongma
    Gerard Doustraat 128a, 1073 VX Amsterdam
    Founded in 2004, this contemporary gallery features a small roster of artists and programs mostly solo shows of their work. It also has produced a small number of publications, available in the gallery.
  • Galerie van Gelder
    Planciusstraat 9a, 1013 MD Amsterdam
    This contemporary commercial gallery represents a hefty roster of internationally known artists (both living and deceased) such as Joseph Beuys, Olafur Eliasson, Marlene Dumas, and Jenny Holzer. Their website is unfortunately awkward to navigate, but it contains a vast array of artwork, as well as artist editions and books for purchase.

    Founded in 2003, this highly professional gallery concentrates on the international art market and represents artists both from the Netherlands and abroad. It presents a mix of solo and group shows.
  • Jeanine Hofland Contemporary Art

    Founded in 2010 in an old grocery store, this gallery’s mission is to support young and emerging artists. It puts on approximately approximately 7 shows per year and focuses on building long-term connections with artists, like traditional galleries, while programming content-based exhibitions that are more in line with the programming in alternative spaces. It also features a side project Alongside# which complements exhibitions with artist lectures, screenings, and performances, and has an annual curatorial residency for young curators.

    An artist-run alternative space on the 2nd floor of a former school building. It includes 9 studios with international resident artists working in a variety of visual media including photography, video, installation, and painting.     Founded in 1979 as an anti-institutional squat, W139 is now an alternative art space working in harmony with local institutions. It seems to take risks and exhibits a variety of media including performance with short consecutive exhibitions. It also includes an independent space within it called BARRY which programs lectures, performances, and film screenings.
  • BERM Collectief

    This experimental art project space concentrates on issues of society and community and curates exhibitions as well as workshops and film screenings.
  • Kulter
    Sanderijnstraat 21, 1055 BN Amsterdam
    An underground art space where two artists are invited to make work around a theme and create pieces which respond to one another’s. The exhibition is then mounted in an intimate space where the artists and the public share a meal and discussion. The venue also features music performances and other events.
  • Outpost

    This alternative, artist-run gallery and project space was founded in October 2009 as a squat in an old Thai restaurant. It hosts concerts and food nights in addition to exhibitions.

    In a local graphic designer’s living room lives a German cabinet from the 1930’s. Every 2 months, the designer invites different artists to exhibit their work in her cabinet and hosts an opening reception in her home.

    Founded in 2009, a local apartment serves as a non-profit project space and exhibits the work of young artists, mostly recent local graduates. Its mission is to generate cross-disciplinary discussions around its programming.

    This alternative venue exhibits contemporary large scale solo exhibitions, allowing each artist’s vision to be more fully realized. It also sublets 10 studios to artists, designers, directors, writers, composers, and editors.

  • MC Theater Westergasfabriek
    Polonceaukade 5, Amsterdam
    Theatre and production house with a focus on young, dynamic and multidisciplinary productions, aiming to represent the multicultural reality of Europe today.
    Theatre and more Multiple art forms are accommodated in this theatre and production house: in addition to theatre performances, there is space for music, new media, dance, exhibitions and more.
    Located in the Westergasfabriek area, the MC Theater houses two studios, a theatre seating 200 and a restaurant/meeting place for dining, dancing or just hanging out.
  • De Melkweg
    Lijnbaansgracht 234a, Amsterdam
    The Melkweg is one of the most well-known cultural centres within and outside the Netherlands, and is unique because of a programme that unites five artistic disciplines under one roof: music, dance/theatre, film, photography and media art. Concerts, dance events, theatrical and dance productions, films, media art presentations and photo exhibitions are staged in five halls and several small rooms.

    Trouw is a music venue, nightclub and event space housed in a former newspaper printing facility. Aimed at combining music, food and arts, Trouw also features a restaurant and concrete walls covered with art and graffiti.
  • Sugar Factory

    The Sugar Factory is a cutting edge multi-disciplinary night theatre. It is the perfect place to dive into dance, live music, live art, poetry, theater and cabaret. The Factory is located next to the Leidseplein, the centre of Amsterdam night life, and this club is an absolute must for everyone who loves art and disco until dawn.

    Klönneplein 1, Amsterdam
    A gas factory founded in 1883 that reopened in 2003 as an arts and cultural center. The site comprises 13 monumental buildings of various sizes that play host to film and theater companies, fashion shows, corporate functions, movie shoots, art exhibitions, operas, techno parties, and assorted festivals. There are also bars, nightclubs, and restaurants.

    The Bimhuis provides a perspective on Dutch and international music in more than 300 concerts annually, in which a variety of jazz and improvised music can be enjoyed.
  • Heineken Music Hall
    Arena Boulevard 590, Amsterdam. A musical arena in the ArenA complex. The Heineken Music Hall regularly plays host to pop, rock and dance acts who are too big for the more central venues. Its modern design lacks character but makes up for it in acoustics.

    The Hackers and Founders Amsterdam website is a Dutch variety who are looking for hackers that are building interesting and awesome things, and in some cases with the possibility to found a company on. The Dutch hackers are especially interested in startups.

    The Club of Amsterdam is an independent, international, future-oriented think tank involved in channeling preferred futures.     The SLUG is the Squatter Linux User Group from Amsterdam. Its main goal is to introduce open source solutions to a wide group of Amsterdam activists still struggling with proprietary software. We give workshops on how to install, configure and use Linux operating system in general. We also give workshops about all variety of free software available (from using gimp, through pure data, to network tools).
    Also as a part of our philosophy we believe that there is no over dated computers. Therefore we love to build machines from recycled hardware which you can find lying everywhere in the streets, attics, basements of Amsterdam. There is no such thing as ‘too old’ computer. It all depends on a destination of your freshly built machine.

    We saw the #occupywallstreet demonstrations occur on 17 September 2011. They demonstrate for freedom and equality for all, and therefore look to Wall Street. Everyone should not only fair access to the riches of the world, but also to have equal decision-making power. Not just a few! Choosing representatives who fail to meet them is NOT democracy. A country that is in debt by the monopoly of the banks printing money is NOT a free country.
    We want through peaceful action draw attention to these issues. We invite everyone to join us to find solutions and our produce an improvement! Progress, striving forward, cooperation and awareness are the keywords of these activities. Occupy Amsterdam has no leaders or representatives. This is a motion on behalf and for all.

These experts are a mix of designers, programmers, social/digital media experts, researchers, copywriters and storytellers. In twenty weeks (one semester) the team develops a working prototype for a client in collaboration them.
    The team works four days a week in Studio HvA or at the client’s office. Additionally, the student has one day a week to work individually on the documentation of their internship or graduation project. The program is in English and available to all final year students from (Applied) Universities.

A hacker space is a real (as opposed to virtual) place where people with common interests, usually in science, technology, or digital or electronic art can meet, socialize and collaborate. A hacker space can be viewed as an open community lab, workbench, machine shop, workshop and/or studio where people of diverse backgrounds can come together to share resources and knowledge to build/make things. We build, we break, we create, we invent and of course we hack. There are no actual limits to creativity (unless it's illegal).

    Masters of Media is the collaborative blog of the new media master students of the University of Amsterdam. The blog launched in September 2006, as part of the new media practises course taught by Geert Lovink, the founder and coordinator of this project. Now in its seventh year the blog is populated by about 60 Masters of Media students of the 2012-2013 one year New Media MA program with additional postings by those nearing completion or recently graduated.
    The MA New Media is one of the Master’s programs of Media and Cultural Studies, which is part of the Faculty of Humanities. The various courses also attract new media-oriented students from the two-year Research Master’s in Media Studies programme.
    The course New Media Practices looks to develop an understanding of the ways media, particularly new media, address people, and articulate social and cultural practice through diverse forms of engagement. Combining this experience with theories of new media not only helps us develop a broader understanding of advancements in technology, it also provides a basis for in-depth perspectives on shifts in our culture.

    Anne Helmond is a New Media PhD candidate with the Digital Methods Initiative at the Mediastudies department at the University of Amsterdam where she studied New Media from 2004-2008. She graduated cum laude with a thesis on ‘ Blogging for Engines. Blogs under the Influence of Software-Engine Relations.’ This research on the symbiotic relationship between blog software and search engines contributes to the existing research on blogs and blogging by framing it from a software-engine perspective and describing a different role of the blogger in this relationship.
    It aims to contribute to the emerging field of Software Studies which addresses the role that software plays in our society. She participated in SoftWhere 2008, the Software Studies Workshop led by Noah Wardrip-Fruin and Lev Manovich at the University of San Diego and gave a lecture on software-engine relations at the HASTACII conference at UC Irvine. Anne continues her research on software-engine relations and cross-syndication politics within social media with the Digital Methods Initiative at the University of Amsterdam.
    From 1999 – 2003 Anne studied at the Utrecht School of Arts where she received a Bachelor degree in Interaction Design and a Master degree in Interactive Multimedia. As a freelance photographer she has worked for VPRO 3VOOR12, the Institute of Network Cultures and covered various new media conferences such as New Cultural Networks, the Next Web and PICNIC.
