FAQ: Advanced Program

Is there connectivity? Is it abundant and strong?

There are two networks (SSINs) you can use: Digital Methods and UvAGuests. Both require passwords. You'll be provided with them upon arrival.

What do I bring?

Bring your computer and your good spirits. Don't forget the VGA adaptor for connecting to a projector, your power and if needed the converter plug for European power outlets.

How do I prepare?

There are background readings in the reader. The reader has two parts. Part I contains the articles from the Digital Methods Training Certificate Program, and Part II has articles even more germane to the advanced projects program weeks.

What happens when I arrive?

You may wish to grab a coffee at Coffee Company or elsewhere before arriving. There is a coffee machine at the University that accepts coins. Next to the coffee machine are a snack machine and a machine with soft drinks that accept only bank cards with an embedded chip (so make friends with a local person with such a card). You may proceed into room 0.13, and find a chair, and power. There will be lots of people to meet.

What are we going to do for 3 weeks?

We'll meet on Mondays and Fridays, and the days are interspersed with talks, discussions, scheduled coffee breaks and working sessions. Please see the Summer School schedule. You're welcome to use the facilities on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays as well. One of the Summer School team members will open the door. There are also other events, some planned and some more spontaneous. One planned event is on "data-driven journalism," where on Tuesday, the 24th of August we will join another team in presenting work on data story-telling.

Are there preferred channels of communication?

Yes, we'll have an open skype channel for all participants, so it's a good idea to have a skype account, perhaps a dedicated Summer School one, or just your own normal one.

What if I would like to continue doing this kind of work?

Please go ahead. Please continue to contribute to the wiki with your project(s), or otherwise make known, or cite in some way, the Digital Methods Initiative, Media Studies, University of Amsterdam, http://www.digitalmethods.net/. If you would like to stay on for the Advanced Projects Program later in the Summer, please be advised that it is full, but there may be a cancellation or two.
